Memorial Day 2012

28 May

What did you do today? Did you attend a parade? Have a picnic? Spend the afternoon in the company of friends and family? Did you remember the service men and women who laid down their lives so that we may live in freedom?

Today, we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, so that we may live without fear. While we should be tankful for these men and women every day of the year, I hope today, of all days, you took a moment to reflect, to really listen to the names of those who will never return home, to ask yourself who those individuals were. Were they married? Did the have children? What were their lives like? Did you take time today to watch out flag billowing on the wind? Or did you notice the flowers and flags in the cemeteries? Did you take a moment of silence to whisper “thank you”?

Building Forts

27 May

I love Sundays! They may be my favorite day of the week!

It was a lazy, humid day here in the Kingdom. I finished reading book four in The Kingdom Keepers Series, The Kingdom Keepers – Power Play. It was an AMAZING book and I had a hard time putting it down at night so I could sleep! So… because I HAD TO KNOW what was happening next in the story, I began book five, The Kingdom Keepers – Shell Game. I am going to feel empty on the inside when I finish this book! Does anyone else get so lost in a story that they cry and laugh with the characters, and feel lonely when the book ends?! I’ve always had that problem…. or connection!

Now, before you think all I did was read today, I did accomplish 3 loads of laundry! I managed to hang 2 loads outside on the clothes lines. THEY SMELL FANTASTIC NOW, like sunshine and starry nights! It’s the little things of summer that I enjoy! There is nothing as wonderful as falling asleep under sheets and blankets that have soaked in the clean summer air! I am going to sleep so well tonight!

Planting the Garden

20 May

It’s that time of year again… Hello summer and fresh veggies!

Tonight I helped the King & Queen (aka: Dad & Mom) plan our garden. It was a lot of hard work, but nice spending quality time together.

Garden totals:

Tomato Plants: 16 – 18 (we lost count!)

Cucumber Plants: 9

Pepper Plants: 12

Squash Plants: 9

Zucchini Plants: 3

Green Bean Seeds: 1 Row

Marigold Plants (to keep the deer out of the garden): 10

“Let’s go running”

18 May

I was at work today when I got a text from my younger sister, Princess Megan, with three of the worst words ever known to someone as physically inactive as myself… “Let’s go running.” But, I can’t complain too much because my sister has been through a lot this past year, battling melanoma. To see more about how she has over come this challenge in her life, watch her YouTube story here.

I have tried for years to become a person who enjoys running. I do good for a few weeks or months, and then I always seem to fall off the bandwagon. Sigh. I envy people who just look good all the time and were blessed with a super high metabolism (like my sister, love her dearly though!).

So, thinking I might stick with it this time if I had a running partner, I excitedly respond, “SURE!

Big mistake…maybe. 🙂

There was a time that I LOVED thunderstorms, but that all changed when I got caught in a nasty storm while I was on The Disney College Program in Orlando, Florida. It happened on one of the last days of my college program, while I was in Disney’s Hollywood Studios getting my picture with characters while wearing my graduation ears. As anyone who has ever lived in or visited central Florida can tell you, on most days there is a daily afternoon rain storm, usually right around 3pm or 4pm. So, I was prepared (at this point I had lived in Florida for just under a year), and I had my rain coat and umbrella with me. However, they were little help against the sideways rain, hail and 60 MPH wind. It also didn’t help that I happened to be waiting for the bus in the parking lot to take me back to College Program (CP) housing, so there was little shelter to be found. Needless to say, the bus was delayed because of the weather making driving nearly impossible and I was stuck out in the rain for nearly 40 minutes with another CP who had just gotten off work. By the time the bus arrived, I was soaked to the bone, shivering hard and feared I would never be dry or warm again. Lucky for me, my boyfriend was waiting for me at the bus stop in his warm truck! And, being the awesome guy he is, got me home, made me EXTREMELY hot tea, and found me all the blankets and warm clothes he had in his apartment. So, ever since that day, thunderstorms have kind of rattled me. I have this fear of getting stranded in one out in the open again. Which brings me to today… Continue reading

Sunday Afternoons

6 May

I love Sunday afternoons. Especially now that the semester is over (graduation in August!) and summer is nearly here! As I write this, I can feel the stress of the week melting away, recharging my battery for the challenges I’m sure to face in the coming days. But for now, as I sit here typing this, all is calm and peaceful. Outside my window I hear the wonderful sounds of lawns being mowed and kids laughing. On the breeze, you can still smell the grilled chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers from lunch. There isn’t a cloud in the sky. In my little part of the world, things are good. It’s the perfect day to sit outside and read a book, so that is what I’m going to do! I’m currently reading Kingdom Keepers III: Disney In Shadow by Ridley Pearson and suffering from Disney withdraw, so these are wonderful! What are you reading?! Let me know in the comments!
