Happy Happenings – January 2017

31 Jan

A few years ago I took part in a 60 day Facebook group happiness challenge hosted by a fitness/wellness counselor. The whole basis of the challenge was learning to let go and move past the things that have hurt us in the past, that we may be holding onto still, and that are preventing us to be fully happy in the present. During the course of those 60 days, we had homework and weekly activities that we were required to complete in order to remain in the program. As a result of those exercises, I learned a lot about myself.

One of our challenges was to notice and publicly share three things each day that brought us joy or made us happy, not matter how big or how small. At first, finding three positive things was a challenge, but then it switched to how do you choose only three! When I was drafting my end of year post for 2016, I was recalling all of the negative things that had happened, but I could hardly remember the positive, and that was devastating. In that moment, I decided it was once again time to focus on happiness.

Beginning on January 1, I shared my three things, and from that day on, I have shared three or more things that blessed my life or brought me joy. It was amazing to see how my outlook on life shifted, and how my small acts of gratitude became contagious within my little sphere of Facebook. Over this month, many have reached out to say how much they enjoy reading my “Happy Happenings” each day and how it is nice to see some positivity in a world full of evil.

My goal is to compile all of these moments through the year so that I will have them to look back on when New Year’s Eve rolls around again. I want to be overflowing with happiness and joy and blessings from a fantastic 2017. And I want to share this positive energy with all of you, so without further ado, here are January’s Happy Happenings!

  1. Spent the first 45 minutes of the new year lighting sparklers with Scott and Macayla.

The Veggie Takeover!

2 Jan

The New Year is often associated with resolutions…be happier, spend more time with the family, work less, lose weight, eat healthier. These are all great and I hope that anyone who makes them sticks with it through the long hall.

This year, I’m not participating in resolutions that will fall by the wayside before February. Rather, Scott and I are committing to making a lifestyle change to eat a whole food, plant-based diet instead. We began talking about this in early December 2016 after visiting with his family for the holidays and expressing our concern about some health issues. We were encouraged to make this change after listening to the health benefit testimonies from his family members who have been eating this way for a few years. They graciously provided us with multiple resources to get us started, including the documentary Forks Over Knives, which we finally had the time to sit down, watch and learn the many interesting facts and statistics it presented today.

I will be honest, a-couple-weeks ago we tried our first plant-based meal, a veggie burger, and it was disgusting, completely lacking in flavor, although it was pretty-looking plate. Two things happened as a result of that meal, first, I had a meltdown thinking about all the food I’d be giving up (beef, chicken, turkey, ice cream, cheese, sweet treats) and I lost it. I didn’t want to do this and I was angry because in that moment I felt Scott was “making me” do this, even though he wasn’t, he fully supported me not following him on this journey. Second, we began to learn what worked and what didn’t (namely, the beans we selected and the veggies we included), and that we NEEDED to find a different “burger” recipe and fast!

Since that inaugural vegan meal, we have had success in the kitchen. We found a “cheese” sauce made with cauliflower that we put on baked potatoes one night and then used the leftover sauce on noodles for macaroni and “cheese” the next night with garlic and basil roasted red potatoes. While that dish had no dairy or animal byproduct, I was able to fool my brain into thinking it was the thick and creamy mac and cheese from childhood! That recipe is a keeper in my book!

For lunch today, Scott whipped up Avocado Pasta with cherry tomatoes and corn. As a side we had some pretzels with garlic hummus. The avocado sauce called for fresh basil, which we cut from our plant, so it great knowing one of the ingredients was grown by us! Another fantastic dish in the books! We have decided that anything that calls for avocado is going to be delicious!

In addition to these, we have enjoyed making our own homemade guacamole for a tasty snack or side!

I know not every meal will earn two thumbs up, and there will be days that I struggle. But I have decided to be 95/5, meaning 95% of the time I will be fully committed to this eating behavior, but if I am out with friends and want a piece of pepperoni pizza, I’ll have it. If I’m over at my parents house and my dad decides to grill up some hamburgers, I’m going to enjoy one. These times will be the 5% – the special treats, the once in a blue moon occurrences.

To hold myself accountable and to gain support from others who have made this lifestyle change, I’m going to be sharing my experiences with you – the good, the bad and the ugly, the highs and lows, the failures and successes. If you have any go-to recipes that don’t call for meat, dairy or other animal byproducts, please share with me!

Little steps, good vibes

5 Jan

I will be the first to admit that I have a tendency to turn molehills into mountains. I know I worry about things other people wouldn’t bat an eye at and I know I lock up my troubles and fears until I’m at a breaking point.

This year I want to change that. I want to be more relaxed, to go with the flow, to let go of the little things. I read somewhere a quote about additude, it was about constantly choosing happiness, positivity and to be a positive force of good in the world, so that’s what I’m trying to do.

I figured the best way to change my outlook on the world was to first start with the outlook I have on myself. Good things in, good things out, right?!

Every morning I start my day with a big glass of water with breakfast. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s not worth it to drink my calories and they say that a glass of water first thing in the morning helps to wake you up and jump start your metabolism. Sometimes for fun, I’ll add one drop (you really don’t need a lot!) of peppermint essential oil for a refreshing taste.

My drive to work used to stress me out also; it’s a new drive with more time spent on the expressway. And once at work, it’s trying to learn new processes and procedures, learning the ins and outs of a new work and team environment and trying to find where I fit on the already established team. I had no idea how draining that would leave me feeling at the end of the day. So to counterbalance both of those, I found a local christian raido station. The music fills my soul and recharges my batteries. I feel empowered to take on the world, or at least my little piece of the world that is.

Finally, my sleep schedule has been suffering lately and I realized it’s because I stopped exercising during the busy holiday season. But no more  excuses of being too tired after work, my waistline can’t keep expanding! One of my favorite workouts is the at home walking workouts by Leslie Sansone. I was so excited to find this 5K walk with a power boost on YouTube. I’ve used this workout twice now and it really gets your heart pumping, which for me allows for a more restful night’s sleep, allowing me to wake up in a better mood and more likely to make better choices through the day.

I’m hoping that as the days and weeks progress, these little things will become part of my natural routine and that I’ll be able to add more positive habits into my daily life.

What steps do you take to have a better day, life and outlook on the world? I’m still early on my journey and would love to know what’s worked for you!

New Year’s Eve 2015

31 Dec

I’m not a big partier when it comes to New Year’s Eve. In years past I have gone to friends homes to celebrate, but in all honestly, I’m completely happy to stay at home in my comfy clothes, with my family, off the roads where there are crazy drivers (who may or may not have been celebrating with too many adult beverages), where I can quickly climb into bed at 12:01 a.m.

image

This year is no different. So far tonight, my sister has taken group selfies, I’ve read 100 pages of my new book, and watched some of the New York City New Year’s Eve coverage on TV.

And folks, this is about as wild and crazy as it’s going to get here on New Year’s Eve….I even went against the packaging and made my Ghirardelli peppermint premium hot cocoa with Cashew Milk rather than water!

And I just finished Factiming with Scott. Long distance relationships are not always easy at the holidays, but we’ve found a way to make it work for us! We had to celebrate the New Year a little early this year so he could get enough sleep before his early work shift tomorrow. We’ve had some fun adverntures and firsts in 2015, and I am so excited to see where 2016 takes us!

image

So here’s to my last post of 2015 – I had grand plans of finishing some drafts I had started a few weeks ago, but I’m just too distracted to write creatively or to go back and edit. I promise, I’ll finish them soon-ish, they are fun stories, so please come back for those!

So readers, what does your NYE look like? Are you a party-animal or a home-body like me? However you are celebrating, I hope you all have a safe, fun-filled and wonderful New Year! I am going to close this out so I can watch Carrie Underwood perform on ABC! Good night and Happy New Year all! 🙂

My Priority Statement:

4 Jan

My fitness and health are my number one priority – I will honor this by committing to loving my body as it is today, while pushing myself to become stronger, trimmer, and healthier tomorrow so that I can be around for a very long time.

I will honor my priority when I feel love for myself and remember to use only words and phrases that will build up my self-esteem and confidence. I will remember that my body is just the shell where I live – it doesn’t define me or limit my potential; however it does house my soul and my true self.

I will commit to exercising 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week and will come as close as possible to the recommended 10,000 steps per day as I can. I will also be more mindful of how late I am staying up so that my body has a chance to fully recharge and recover during a full 8 hours of sleep each night. I will be more aware of the food I am putting into my body and why – am I really hungry or am I thirsty, tired, stressed, anxious or mad? I will choose water more often than ice tea and juice, even if that means drinking it at room temperature. I will do better at counting my calories and using the resources available to me (i.e. My Fitness Pal and my Jawbone Up 24 app).

I will not feel guilty when I turn down my coworkers offer to order out for lunch or feel obligated to eat a cookie or something sweet they brought in to share.

I will limit my time reading for pleasure or watching TV so I can fit in my workouts.

I promise myself I will notice one thing I love, that is beautiful about my body everyday. I will never talk negatively when clothes don’t fit right or if I have yet to master a simple yoga pose. I will stop comparing my body to my friends, family members and celebrities as we are all at a different place on the fitness journey.

I will work to not punish myself for “bad days” or “slip-up days”. I will acknowledge that I was not trying at a 100% and will start again tomorrow; I will get up and try again. Failure is not an option and is not in my vocabulary any longer.

I will know I am perfectly committed to my fitness and health when I feel pride and joy in my progress and power in my choices. I will see a girl who is confident, radiant, self-assured of her place in the world and a beautiful person inside and out. I will have a smaller dress size and a smile that lights up the room! I will have energy to spare, smaller body measurements, healthy lab levels, control over my emotional eating, knowledge of how to live a healthier lifestyle, the desire to share that knowledge with others and the piece of mind that my outside finally matches the beauty I’ve always felt on the inside. I will hear the compliments of people who’ve noticed my progress and want to know how I’ve done it, I will hear my breathing is easier, no wheezing in my lungs and my heart won’t be pumping as hard. I will hear the roar of the crowds cheering when I cross the finish line of future races!

I will know that I have done my best and that I gave it my all. I will know that I am worth spending time on. I will know strength, power, and freedom and have a clear understanding that I am in control of my life and that I have the power to change the things I don’t like with a little hard work and determination.

**Are you wondering how I came up with my personalized priority statement? Interested in creating one for yourself? Watch the same videos I did by Chalene Johnson – I’ve made it very easy for you to find the videos on this playlist! If you’re interested in following along with the worksheet she mentions, here it is: SSS Life Balance Worksheet! I hope that you’ll take what she has to say seriously to heart, I have a better understanding of the things I need to change and focus on in my own life now!
