Hello, Santa.

29 Nov

Did you have parents who would threaten to call Santa Claus at this time of the year if you started misbehaving? I sure did! There is no sentence quite as terrifying as “I’m telling Santa you’re being bad” to a youngster. Well, now that I’m the adult (haha, when did that happen!?), I had my first opportunity to play the “Santa Card” this evening.

On my way home from work I decided to call and chat with my cousin, Mandy, about our upcoming day-trip to New York City. She had just picked up her two little boys, Paul (nearly 5) and Ryan (3), from her mom’s and was heading home. However, she needed to make a quick stop at Goodwill to find a sweater she could DIY for her company’s ugly Christmas party. Not wanting to take the boys in with her, she asked if I would meet her at the store (it’s next to my apartment complex). Less than a 5 minute walk later, she was explaining that the boys were watching a movie and she’d only be a few minutes. Easy peasy, I’ve got this!

All was fine and dandy until the car turned off – you know, like the 10 minutes you have after turning off the car before the radio goes out. Thinking the boys’ movie would come back on like the radio by turning the key, I gave it a try – unsuccessful, although we were greeted by some lovely Christmas tunes! This is when the boys lost it.

At that moment they wanted nothing more to do with “Auntie” and wanted mom now. They began messing with the windows, which I had thought were locked. This wasn’t enough for them – they start chucking little pieces of bread and paper out the widows into the parking lot as I am frantically trying to figure out which buttons control their windows and which button will prevent them from putting them down once more. All the while, I can see Mandy waiting not-so-patiently in line with two sweaters.

Finally, FINALLY,  I located the right window buttons, and using the boys’ middle names, get them to keep their fingers and toes inside the vehicle. And just like that, the screeching and fake crying begins – “you’re mean. I don’t want you here.” Is that music to all disciplining adults? Ignoring them, I attempt to communicate telepathically with Mandy that her sons are having a meltdown. Although I didn’t get through to her, Scott (boyfriend) must have sensed something was up, because he called at that exact moment and inspiration struck!

Me: “Hello Santa.”

Scott: “Santa? What?”

Me: “Why yes, Santa. I am in the car with two little boys who aren’t being very good right now.”

Scott: “Oh, I see what you’re doing now.”

Mandy has completed her transaction and is making her way to the car.

Me: “Santa, their mom is coming. I’ll have to call you right back.”

Jumping out of the car I quietly and quickly explained the phone call and that her boys might ask about Santa now. She just laughs, finding the whole situation hysterical! Back in the car, she asks her boys about their behavior and our phone call with Santa before proceeding to show me her sweaters. After a few moments, this little voice from the backseat pipes up.

Paul: “Riah, can I see your phone?”

Me: “Why do you need my phone?”

Paul: “I need to call Santa.”

Mandy and I just glance at each other and try desperately not to laugh.

Me: (thinking quickly) “I’m sorry buddy, we can only talk to Santa once a week and we just used our phone call. You’ll have to wait until next week.”

Paul: (considers this for a moment) “Okay, then we can tell him I’m being good now.”

Me: “Absolutely, buddy!”

Who knew playing the Santa Card could be so much fun?!

Long, long ago….finish the story

10 Apr

I love how TimeHop provides daily blasts from the past from my various social media accounts for my enjoyment and amusement. Sometimes, like today it finds gems I had completely forgotten about.

Back in 2011 when I was still on the Disney College program I posted a status starting a story and asked my Facebook friends to continue the tale. My best guess is that I was working an evening shift at Disney Quest and wanted something entertaining to read during my breaks. My friends did not disappoint – their creativity knew no limits as they sent a beautiful princess on a dangerous quest.

Each line is by a different author. And now, for the first time in five years I am excited to present our Facebook Fairy Tale…

Long, long ago in a far off kingdom there lived a beautiful princess preparing for a dangerous quest…

…The very first thing before she set off on her quest was to be very sure that there were no toads lurking nearby…

…Even though it was a dangerous quest, she knew that she would be okay because she knew who she was and she had her family’s support and love.

…So she picked up and put one foot in front of the other and headed out the door…

…Along her quest, she met a talking squirrel named Charlie. After spending a few moments talking, Charlie and the princess discovered that they were both heading in the same direction and decided to continue on their path together. They walked for hours and talked about…

…everything  under the sun, from how to survive without your momma and papa, to what exciting adventures awaited them ahead in the magical land that they were traveling to. Now, what the princess did not know was that Charlie was a magical squirrel and he was able to…

…cast a love spell to make even your enemies love you!!…

…Also, he makes the best ice cream sundaes on the planet, but you have to…

…provide your own chocolate syrup! Anyway, the princess knew what dangers lay ahead even just outside of her castle…

…The wicked witch lived, who never wanted her to find love, so she…

…had a plan to get the princess far, far away from everyone she loved including her family and friends. However, the princess was unaware of this evil plan, because she thought she was going on an awesome adventure until…

…the wicked witch, along with her sidekick Prince Humperdink, unleashed their army of toads…

…The only weapon the princess had was her kiss, but there were sooo many toads so she closed her eyes and…

…began to whistle. The whistling brought a variety of birds to the area. And you know that birds naturally prey upon toads, so…

…all of the toads disappeared. And the birds began to chase the princess around the castle so Humperdink then…

…fell into the river of doom where…

…the evil spell that had been cast on him was broke because he was really a…

**note to you all – Humperdink is a bad guy, he is the head toad!

…Master manipulator, and although he tried to trick the princess into liking him, her common sense told her there was someone better for her so she and Charlie ran to the nearest river to get…

…refreshed. The princess and Charlie were exhausted, too much stress, ya know. Once they took a moment to themselves, they decided to continue on their adventure. After walking several hours, they finally ended up…

…back at Charlie’s  house where the beautiful princess kissed him and he turned back into the handsome prince!…

…NO SIR!!! She baked him an apple pie and they spent time together and she found out what his middle name was and what his favorite color was and that he is truly princely BEFORE SHE EVER KISSED HIM!!!…

…Which she already had because at night after their questing they had hung out eating nachos and talking for hours on end, so when they did kiss…

…they wore just engaged buttons…

…and then they went out again on their path that lead to the place where the quest all started and before you knew it all the toads were on the path and looking at the beautiful princess wishing they had become the prince who won the prize of the princess.

The End.

The Baseball Joke

21 Mar

When I was a little kid I told one joke so often I’m sure my parents got really sick of hearing it! Where did I hear it from you ask – no clue but for whatever reason, it became my go-to joke! So for your reading pleasures… I present the baseball joke from my childhood! Enjoy!

Two old men were sitting on a couch watching a baseball game one afternoon. Joe says to Phil, “I wonder if they have baseball up in Heaven.”

Phil answered “I don’t know, but if I die first I’ll come down and let you know.”

To which Joe responded “And if I die first, I’ll come down and tell you!”

Three years later, Phil dies.

Baseball season rolls around a few months later and there Joe is sitting on the couch watching the game and thinking about the conversation he had with Phil about baseball up in Heaven. And then all of a sudden Phil is standing there in front of him!

“I have some news for you, Joe” he says. “They do have baseball up in Heaven….and YOU’RE UP NEXT!”

**Looking back, not the funnest joke, but still mine! Now it’s your turn, leave me a joke in the comments – I love a good laugh!

Share Your World – 8/28/14

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Blogging is unique in it lets us connect with so many people around the world and helps us get to know people we may otherwise have never met. While looking for inspiration about what to write tonight, I stumbled across Cee’s Photography and decided to answer the latest questions in her series “Share Your World.” So pull up a chair, make yourself comfy and take a moment to get to know just a little bit more about me! And if you’re feeling up to it, answer the questions so I can get to know you, too! After all, friendship is a two-way street, best traveled together!

  • Do you believe in ghosts?

I wouldn’t go so far as to call them ghosts, spirits, angels, celestial beings – absolutely.  There have been too many times in my life where I’ve heard stories of friends/family feeling the presence or hearing a voice when they were all alone. And what about times when you’ve been running late or in a weird turn of events suddenly decide to change your normal routine only to discover that had you not, you could have ended up in the middle of something terrible. On the flip side of the equation, I do believe there are evil forces at bay as well, trying to convert us to their side, because as we all know, misery loves company.

  • Regardless of your physical fitness, coordination or agility:  If you could play any sport professionally what would it be?  Or if you can’t picture yourself playing sports, what is your favorite sport?

Before my four knee surgeries, I use to play soccer. I began playing at 5 years old all the way to my freshman year of high school. It took some time to discover which position I loved most, but once found, I rocked as a defending sweeper. Near the end of my soccer career, I was even starting to enjoy being the goalie – I loved seeing how far I could drop kick the ball, I felt so powerful! These days, my sport of choice is surprisingly running. I have completed four 5Ks (runDisney Princess 5K 2011, runDisney Expedition Everest 5K Challenge 2013, Color Vibe 5K 2013, Mad Hatter 5K 2013), a 10 mile race (runDisney Tower of Terror 10 miler 2013) and am training for my first half marathon in November (runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2014)! The only person I compete with is myself, and I love seeing the progression I’ve made and the physical challenges I’ve over come to get to this point!

  • Do you prefer long hair or short hair on yourself?

This is a no brainer for anyone who knows me – the answer will always be LONG HAIR. I have (what I consider) an oddly shaped face that just can’t pull off short hair – it makes my face look almost perfectly circular and very chubby. Also, you CAN’T DO ANYTHING with short hair – I love braiding and twisting and every now and then curling my hair. In my free time I can often be found watching different hair tutorials on YouTube looking for new and adorable styles to try on my hair!

  • If you were on a small island, who would you want to be with, where is it and how big is it?

How funny, I was just talking about islands with one of my very best friends just the other night. We decided that if you’re going to be on an island, it better be tropical, sunny all the time and the water surrounding it better be crystal clear. As for the person I’d want with me, that would be Scott. It would be nice to be in the same place together for more than 5 days at a time a couple times a year (long distance relationships are the worst in case you were wondering). He’s someone who not only makes me feel safe and loved and beautiful, he’s constantly making me laugh and enjoys adventures and helps me to see the world differently. As for the island itself, it would resemble something like Isle Esme from the Twilight Series – the location they used for the movie was breath-taking, (off the coast of Brazil) it featured sandy white beaches, mountains, open floor plan for the house with huge picture windows, caves, waterfalls – check it out for yourself

National Sisters Day

3 Aug

Happy National Sisters day to my lovable, funny, sometimes annoying little sisters Megan and Macayla. You may drive me nuts at times, but when I need you, I know I can always count on you to be there! We’ve had our ups and downs over the years, and more adventures than I can remember! I love that you’re always around to talk or snap a silly selfie! I’m lucky to have the sisters I do, because they aren’t just family, they are two of my favorite people in the world! Love you, ‘lil sisters! ❤

Memorial Day 2014

26 May

Today was bittersweet as we watched my youngest sister, Macayla, march in her last Memorial Day parades. Way to end on a high note, kiddo!! 🙂
